Spring Cruise Sailing Instructions 2008

Spring Cruise Courses 2008

The cruising fleet of Corinthian Yacht Club of Philadelphia enjoys an extraordinary history in the annuals of cruising in the United States. Yachtsmen from CYC have been involved in big boat competitive sailing since the Clubs’ inception in 1892. This tradition continues currently.
Various CYC Members are racing in Newport/Bermuda, Annapolis/Newport, Annapolis/Bermuda, Halifax Race, and Annapolis Fall Series, and NYYC Cruises to name but a few. Our cruising continues with former Commodore E. Smith on "Reindeer" (Greenland), E. C. Kirk Hall (circumnavigation), and Gerald Dowling on "Suzanne Marie" (Ireland and Norway). On a Club scale, our current fleet of Racer/Cruisers is principally quartered in the Chesapeake. It comprises approximately fifty to sixty boats of varying size and each Spring (Memorial Day) and Fall the Club conducts its Spring and Fall Cruises. These involve a reception at the beginning and end of each cruise for all skippers and their crews who intend to participate in the Cruise, as well as an invitation to other CYC Members and their guests. During the Cruises there are two days of either point to point or around the buoys racing in a Fleet divided into Class A (Spinnaker), Class B-1, B-2 and Class C. The boats race under PHRF of the handicap system. This is Club racing at its finest with good camaraderie amongst the CYC Members and guests at the receptions and raft ups.

In addition to the Spring and Fall Cruise, every other Summer CYC has a New England Cruise/Rally which involves a very informal race from Corinthian Yacht Club of Cape May to our sister Club, Conanicut Yacht Club, Jamestown Rhode Island Conanicut. The CYC Members and Conanicut Members enjoy a reception, following which CYC skippers and crew continue with their own cruising plans either Down East, Narragansett, Block Island Sound, Vineyard Sound, Buzzard’s Bay or other similar destinations. In this Cruise/Rally format many CYC skippers stretch their cruising legs to new locations while in the company of familiar CYC boats and Members. On the alternative years when not going to New England on its Cruise/Rally, CYC arranges a Summer South Cruise down the Chesapeake to the Potomac, Rappahannock, York and James Rivers to areas of the Chesapeake not frequently visited by CYC Members.

By reason of the concentration of the CYC Cruising Fleet in the mid-Chesapeake area of Chester River, Magothy River, to Choptank River, there are frequent opportunities for CYC Cruisers to raft up or do further cruising in the company of other CYC boats and skippers throughout the Spring, Summer and Fall of each year. CYC is looking to expand its Cruising Fleet and encourages anyone interested in joining in the Club racing and destination cruising to inquire further about this aspect of Corinthian Yacht Club’s activities.
